Vaginoplasty is procedure of reconstruction of the vagina. It is a type of genitoplasty.
Who are the candidates for vaginoplasty?
Vaginoplasty procedure is right for you if:
- Congenital absence of vagina
- Removal of vagina during cancer surgery
- Transgender surgery (male to female conversion)
- After traumatic injury or infection of vagina
What is involved in vaginoplasty?
In this technique, a vaginal vault is created between the rectum and the urethra either with skin graft or skin flap. In transgender surgery (male to female) vaginoplasty is done by inverting penile skin or bowel
vaginoplasty. Typical depth is 15 cm (6 inches), with a range of 12-16cm (5-6.5 inches).
How will be the recovery after procedure?
Recovery depends on the extent of procedure. To ease the discomfort after procedure, keep some
pillows under your pelvic region and do cold compressions as it helps in decreasing swelling. Swelling
usually subsides over week. Generally, expect a week down time to resume job. It is advisable to avoid
heavy work for 3- 4 weeks. Patient needs regular dilatation which is act of inserting a medical grade
dilator into the vagina to keep your vaginal canal open. This is done for long time after surgery.
Is the vaginoplasty sexually functional?
Yes. 12-weeks after surgery, the vagina are often used for receptive intercourse. additionally, the clitoris
may have sensation.
When am I able to begin engaging in sexual intercourse after surgery?
You must abstain from any form of sexual activity for 12 weeks after surgery. Sexual activity during your recovery period can delay wound healing and cause a variety of complications.
How long does it take sensation to return back?
Nerve regeneration can begin as early as 3 weeks post-operatively goes on sometimes years.
